A Letter from Bishop Lucia

May 8, 2024

Dear Friends in Christ,

It is with mixed emotions that the Diocese of Syracuse announces the upcoming closure of Christ the King Retreat House, effective June 30, 2024. The retreat house has served our community faithfully since 1994, offering a sacred space for spiritual renewal and reflection.

This decision comes after careful consideration and prayer. Over the past years, we have experienced a decline in the overall demand for retreat experiences. This, coupled with the need to address essential capital improvements and staffing challenges, has made the continued operation of Christ the King Retreat House unsustainable.

The Diocese of Syracuse is committed to responsible fiscal management. Closing the retreat house allows us to allocate resources more effectively toward core ministries throughout our community.

We are deeply grateful to Joan Spector, Director and the dedicated staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, and former retreat directors who have contributed so much to Christ the King Retreat House over the years. Their service has provided countless individuals and groups with opportunities for spiritual growth and encounters with God.

We understand that this news may be disappointing to some. We are committed to working collaboratively with existing retreat groups to explore alternative options for their future gatherings.

The Diocese of Syracuse remains dedicated to fostering a vibrant spiritual life within our community. We will find new ways, working closely with our parishes and diocesan ministries, to offer a variety of experiences and resources to support and engage the faithful.

May Christ's peace continue to guide us all.

In the Name of Jesus,

Most Rev. Douglas J. Lucia
Bishop of Syracuse

Christ the King Retreat and Conference Center exists to provide an environment and opportunities for spiritual enrichment and for personal and professional growth in a creative space. We welcome all who seek healing, inner peace and transformation. An initiative of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse, we work to enhance the evangelization efforts of the diocese by being a support to the parishes. We embrace our catholicity to the fullest extent by providing a place of welcome and belonging for all.
